Sumner Indivisible's First Community Gathering

On the heels of our galvanizing No Kings rally in Gallatin, we wanted to offer Sumner Indivisible friends a chance to gather in person. Building in-person community is a high priority for us as an organization. We feel it's imperative to building trust and safety within our movement. Individuals from all over the county joined for the opportunity to get to know each other, learn more about Indivisible, plan strategy, and talk about our personal experiences under this administration.

People went around the room and introduced themselves, sharing unique perspectives and concerns. Discussions opened up about what exactly Indivisible is, and how to reach a broad and non-partisan audience. Emphasis was placed on the intention to keep our organization collaborative and people-powered. Some attendees volunteered to take on assistive roles in our organization, which we are so thrilled about!

Attendees agreed that several things would benefit our organization moving forward:

  • Monthly in-person meetings

  • A slogan or catchphrase communicating our goals

  • Greater social media presence

Several speakers addressed the room to catch our group up to speed on state and county issues. Brooklynn White spoke on the years-long battle to keep our libraries inclusive, well-funded, well-staffed and free from censorship under a library board overtaken by right-wing zealots. Lindsay Doss discussed TN's voucher scams and Lamberth's HB 793, the bill to deny undocumented children free access to public schools. Chair of the Sumner County Democratic Party, Megan Lange, discussed the SCDP's upcoming "So you wanna run for office" info session on July 9th.

We want all of you to be able to engage with our entire ecosystem: from the county and city level to the national level. Sumner County leadership currently relies on lack of local knowledge to get away with carrying out an absurdly right-wing agenda. Our goal is to empower citizens in our county with the tools to fight against an agenda which does not speak to our needs and values.

Keep an eye out on our events page and in your inbox for the date of our next in-person meeting. Also, thank you to all who attended!
